Day 6 (incomplete)
10:40 PM

Good evening all, we have climbed 5000 m up and 5000 m down xiang shan today and that is really a good acomplishment! Indeed, we climbed up the mountain and came down the mountain as a whole team supporting each other in a way or another. We also visited the "RC" of the section of beijing. We are all very very tired after one whole day of climbing so therefore we will have to sleep early today. We have to wake up at 5am tomorrow morning in order to reach ren min guang chang on time for the flag raising ceremony.

Will write today's reflection tomorrow as I am also dead beat,

Good Night!

Day 5

Tuesday

6th November 2007

Weather: Hazy

We visited the great wall today. We went to the MU TIAN YU section of the great wall. Climbed over a few hundred steps and for he first time, our school principal, Mdm Lee climbed up with us! Words of all sorts could not describe the scene up there. After that, we went back to school for some games. We learnt how to play the kong zhu. It's really fun and intresting to play. We went home early as our buddies are having their exams tomorrow.Moving to the hotel in 2 days time and for tomorrow, going to climb xiang shan and do CIP!

I still remembered 4 years ago, I came to beijing and climbed ba da ling section of the great wall. This time it is much more challening as we had to climb to the top of the mountain before stepping onto the great wall. For Ba Da Ling, you can start to climb the great wall once you arrive. As we are moving in a team, we had to help each other in a way or another. It was after much walking and climbing until we reached the the top of the hill. It can be said as a huge acomplishment as not many of us has walked this far before.

The journey back was quite a long distance and we stopped by a restaurant for lunch. We had a particular tribe theme lunch and it was really delicious. The restaurant was just right next to the Niao Chao ( the 2008 beijing olypics stadium). Did not get to take pictures as it was rather hazy. It is really wasted however, i suppose we would be brought there once more one day.

We proceeded back to school and had a little session of sharing of happenings and experiences. After that, we went to learn how to play kong zhu. The session was quite fun though. It i acctually quite easy to control the kong zhu and I even tried to throw it up in the air and for 2 times I managed to catch it!

Now back at home writing this reflection. I arrived at home at around 6pm and for the first time I took the taxi with daniel chia alone back home and I did it! Initially we wanted to go shopping however Mdm Yong asked us to go home and rest. However our buddies have already left so we took a taxi and arrived successfully back home!

New facts learnt:

Coke is more expensive than beer in china.

Beer is more expensive than coke in Singapore.

China's rice are small and round; just like little pearls.

Asian rice is long and thin.

Mu Tian Yu and Ba Da Ling are the more popular visiting sites for the great wall of china.

It has been 2200 years since the Great Wall was being built. (Emperor Qin Shi Huang)

In the rural provinces in China, you can remarry if your husband dies

However in the urban provinces like beijing, you cannot remarry if your husband dies as the population number is far too much already.

There are only two Wonders of the world that can be seen from space

1. Pyramids of egypt

2. Great wall of china

After chairman mao said " bu deng chang cheng fei hao han" everyone rushed to Beijing to see the Great Wall.

Fruit trees are grown at mu tian yu

Mu tian yu has the nicest scenery

More updates tomorrow!

Day 4
10:16 PM

Day 4
Monday
5th November 2007
Weather: Fine

Hello! Today we had a series of events in school and I myself really did have a fun time! For the first half of the day, we sat in our buddy's classes for leassons. Their lesson are really further in deapth and much more difficult than what we are learning now. Lunch was also being delivered to our class rooms. For the second half of the day, we had a session of music and a lesson on character by Sun Lao Shi, the chinese head of department of beijing 54 middle school. We seperated for dinner and then met at 7pm to watch an acrobatic show staged at a library. Reached home at around 9pm and we better get some rest as we are going to climb the great wall of china tomorrow!

The first time I stepped into a foreign classroom and I realised that traditional methods are still being used these days. They still use the blackboard, however, the classrooms are equipped with air conditioners, however it will be only turned on in summer. These are my very first imperssions when I first stepped into the classroom. A warm round of applause greeted us as we sauntered into the classroom. This is how receiving they are when we come. The average number of classes they (equivilant to secondary 4) have during the day would be 8 classes, which excludes their 1 and a half hours lunch break. Therefore, school ends at around 5pm. Met some of Ma Teng's classmates, they seem taller and bigger build than me as I am 2 years their junior. Another thing I realised is that the method of teaching there is much different from what Kranji teachers teach. They use the asking method in order for students to give explainations and answers. The teacher would ask a random student to stand up and would be given a question to answer. If he or she is unable to answer the question, they would have to remain standing. Another thing I realised is that their testbooks and workbooks are all made from recycled paper, something similar to the material of our newspapers. This will help save the environment as it reuses paper and saves more trees. Unlike singapore, the tectbooks are all filled with colour and think layers of paper. This I think is quite a waste of resources. A book which has content and diagrams are already enough for personal use, why go to the entent of wasting precious resources?

After a series of lessons, it was lunch break. The packet lunches are being sent to each classroooms for everyone to eat. The meals are relatively delicious and are much more efficient. This is really too different from Kranji Secondary. We get to choose the variety of food that we want to eat and can decide wheather or not to eat. I found out that some students do not eat and therefore lead to the wastage of food. If many students do that, that would be a huge amount of waste being generated. However, the food the school provides are full of nutritions and are healthy food, therefore they can control what you consume in order for you to mantain a balanced lifestyle. If you were given a choice of food, you might go for the french fries everyday and this would lead to unforseen consequences.

After lunch, we had a peking opera singing lesson where we did had lots of fun. The teacher explained to us what does each coulor on each mask represent and we did had a fun time singing too! Then the HOD of Chinese Sun Lao Shi taught us a character building lesson. He focused on LOVE, CARE, MANNERS, MINDSET and TRUST. The intresting lesson allowed us to get to know more new things of Beijing and some are what I have discovered:

Singapore 660 sq km
China 9600000 sq km
Beijing 1.67 wan sq km

1 october is china's national day

mao zhe dong is the founder of china
zheng ge ping is the bearer of china after he died(build the futre of beijing)

Beijing has the 3rd fastest growing economy in the world

There are 56 tribes in China

13 billion population in China

Few thousands of slangs and tones in China

7384
Kong Zi died at 73 years old
Meng Zi died at 84 years old

After that we watched a beijing acrobatic show. It was really fasinating and cool! These are much to the professional standard and it is much better than what I have watched last time when I was here. Update till here.

Day 3
10:19 PM

Day 3
Sunday
4th November 2007
Weather: Fine

Writing in again today. Today is shopping day! I went with a few people to few shopping areas in beijing. I bought a few things including a pair of black gloves which cost me 20 rmb (S$4) and two real adidas jackets 750 rmb in total (S$70 for one and S$80 got another) Pretty cheap though as you cant get this sort of prices in singapore. They are all brand new and are pretty nice in design. Both of the jackets are black and white. One special thing about the second one is that it is a limited edition version and the more special thing is that one side of its sleave is black and the other is white. It is really very cool!

We went to places like xi dan, xiu shui jie and shang pin zhe kou. I also took the Beijing Subway for the very first time. Technology has really changed the world. It is something very much like Singapore's MRT however, the inside of the train is much more high tech than those of singapore's. There is a automatic machine that will give directions and instructions when you board the train.

At Xu Shui Jie, I bought a pair of gloves. My previous pair of gloves that I brought was a little too thick, so it might not be too comfortable when carrying things. Its original price was 120 rmb but after MaTeng bargained, we got it down to 20 rmb. Considered quite a good deal. See, this is the art of bargaining.

At around 5pm, we joined Samuel, Wan Teng, Yan Fu and Kah Fong at a KTV. It is not really a KTV, something like KBOX in Singapore. The 3hour package counts down to only S$5 with free buffet and free flow of drinks. The room is much bigger and comfortable, with a large plasma screen. There is also a service men at each room. What a wonderful experience!

That's it for today. Will be in school the whole day to "shang ke"! Hope I can learn new and more things tomorrow!

Day 2
9:50 PM

Day 2
Saturday
03 November 2007
Weather: Fine

Today is my second official day in beijing! Today went to two different places, Yi He Yuan and Yuan Ming Yuan. Really majestic places especially for the latter. Yi He Yuan also known as summer palace, is basically a chinese garden situated in the outskirts of beijing. The emperor' s house is there too. There are alot of bridges and hills weaving around a lake. This lake takes a special shape. It has the shape of the map of China, as said to be shaped like a bird's wing. Truely a remarkable landmark which marks its history of very long time ago.

Yuan Ming Yuan is another park with a ancient relic site next to it. The site was invaded by the French and English men in the 1860s in early October ( the whole process of destroying the site was from October 6th till October 19th) The site marks a certain value of china's history as many important articles and treasure was stored at yuan ming yuan. The whole place was thorn down and burnt down by the French and English and only little bits of stone rubble was left. After destroying the place, the invaders left. This is a really cruel way to deal with what they cannot acheive. It is not fair and unjust to tear down property that does not belong to them. Many precious articles up till now have not been recovered as the english soldiers stole them and distributed it world wide. Some have even been smashed into pieces. The area of fountains and pools are now left with large chunks of rocks and stones. Really a true and magnificient place.

This marks the end of today's entry. My legs are all aching now as we walked a lot today. We walked round the whole yi he yuan (round the lake) and walk even more at yuan ming yuan. Tomorrow will be shopping spree and kboxing day. Today was history, tomorrow is now. Oldern vs Modern.

I saw the bird's nest too today when we were on the way to yi he yuan. The official 2008 Beijing Olympic Stadium. It is really a huge site and it will be worked to full force in 2008.

Coundown to 2008 Beijing Olympics: 279 Days from today

New Facts I have learnt about China/Beijing:

There are a total of 88 bridges in Beijing.

The lake at yi he yuan takes the shape of China's map.

Day 1
7:38 PM

Woke up 0515am in the morning, showered and washed up, all ready to go. My baggage was not that big or bulky so it just went fine. Arrived at the airport at around 0650, a little late though however was still in time. Punctuality should always be practiced at all times so as not to delay the whole crowd waiting for just one person. It is at least better to be early than to be late. Therefore, we should make it a habit to be punctual at all times. This is my first learning point this morning.

Took off at about 0850 local time and overall the flight was smooth and peaceful. Unfortuntely, we had a little issue here. Pei Si accidentally lost her mobile phone. Here, there is also another learning point to take note. When travelling, be sure to have all personal belongings properly kept and be sure that it is in a safe place. The world is so big, who knows where to start finding when you loose something. So what I have known, when travelling, do remember to guard your belongings properly.

Safely landed at around 1850 local time and waited a long long time before we could clear the immigration. This puts our paitience to a test. We have to wait paitiently for our turn before being released. This is a process everybody has to go through when you travel overseas. Therefore, we have to be patient and wait for our turn before acheiving what you want.

I have also noticed when we were queuing up to clear the customs, most of us started taking off their winter jackets. We were told to put it on before we get out to the baggage claim so that we would not look flustered. Indeed this is true. The advice from our teachers, we should all take it into consideration. How hot can it be? If we learn how to bear with it for a little while, this shows that you are fit and "well trained" to go overseas. Another lesson to take into consideration.

Departed from the airport at 1830, and headed on the express way ( guo men di yi lu 1992-1993 built to welcome guest for the 2008 Beijing Olympics) There was a little welcome ceromony for us when we arrived at Beijing 54 Middle School at 1850. Such warm welcomes from our friends and teachers from Beijing 54 Middle School left us all excited and all filled with anticipation. This kind of welcome is really hard to get these days. So therefore, we should treasure the days we have together and spend it fruitfully.

With the details of today's lessons learnt and happenings, I send my regards to my friends in Singapore!

This is a piece of reflection i had to do. I was too lazy to write it in hand, so i decided to type it out hehehe... Anyway, here are some information about Beijing. I took down some notes when the tour guild gave us a short introduction of Beijing. Hope I got it all right.

Beijing has 853 years of history.

Our objective of coming here is to look back 500 years from now and now till the future. Lesson time!!! (gu du vs xian dai)

6 chao zi dong

6 main places of intrests in Beijing which includes Great Wall, Summer Palace deng deng.

Food Speaciality: Pekking Duck

How BIG is Beijing: 1 wan 86_ _ sq metres

Beijing is in a form of square. ( dong, nan, xi, bei)

National Flower: Mu Dan Flower (fu gui zhi hua)

Beijing mascots ( why there are 5?) It represents the 5 elements on earth. ( Jing, Mu, Shui, Huo, Tu) The colours are all stated in the Beijing Olympic Mascots. ( It is a fengshui tradition)

Chairman Mao once said: Bu Deng Chang Chen Fei Hao Han

China's Emperor's favourite number: 9

The 2008 Beijing Olympics will commence on 8th of August 2008, 20:08(8:08pm) (8 represents FA!)

China's 4 main capital city:
Beijing
Tian Jing
Shanghai
Chong Qing

No building in beijing should be built higher than Gu Gong if not it will be against the law and the charge will be chopping off of the head.

Now we are in the Chao Yang Qu of Beijing. ( It's a fast moving place)

For a city to be glorious, there should be many bridges (way of transport) (Did you know that China has the most number of bridges in the world? Now you know)

September - October : nice time to come to Beijing as this is the best season. Worldwide meetings are carried out in this season as the weather is cool and fine. Also known as the harvest season as crops are ready to be harvested.

November onwards : Temperatures can reach down to -22 degrees. Chilly winter.
